Context
RTE, the French electricity transmission system operator is in charge of the high-voltage grid installation, connection, and management onshore and offshore. This includes the connecting of all the marine renewable energy farms being developed in France.
RTE is also in charge of the French offshore wind farm’s connection to the coast and to the national grid.
Challenge 1
With the growth of marine renewable energy developments in France with numerous offshore wind and floating offshore wind farms, RTE needs several metocean studies along the cable routes to plan and design the installation in the best possible manner. Because of the numerous needs, RTE decided to set up a framework contract.
Solution 1
Sinay in collaboration with ACRI-HE has been awarded this framework contract to provide metocean studies to RTE when required for subsea cable installation.
Challenge 2
RTE needed to take decisions regarding the most relevant cable route with respect to the oceanic and sedimentary constraints. RTE needed to consider the cable installation method with the required burial depth in order to deal with the agitation due to currents and waves.
Solution 2
In collaboration with Egis, we provided RTE with a complete analysis of ocean currents and waves along the potential cable routes for the wind farm projects offshore Saint Brieuc and Saint Nazaire. Based on the existing metocean database, tailored modeling, and statistical analysis, Open Ocean computed extreme wave values, storm surge analysis, as well as bottom current estimates at numerous locations from the offshore wind farm to the coast.

N-SEA
Submarine cables
Context
N-Sea is an integrated total subsea solutions provider in Survey, IRM & Construction, Subsea Cable Repair & Installation, and UXO ID & Disposal.
We deliver effective and cost-efficient solutions for subsea infrastructures and assets that meet the needs of our clients and the international oil & gas, and renewable industries, considering a safe environment.
It provides all elements of turnkey global undersea transmission systems. N-Sea offers an extensive services portfolio including project management, installation, commissioning, and marine and maintenance operations performed by its wholly-owned fleet of cable ships.
Challenge
Working at sea comes with a risk of unforeseeable weather delays due to bad weather circumstances. The unpredictable weather conditions and the changing market circumstances regarding who is the owner of this risk, make it more and more important to properly evaluate the potential consequences. Therefore N-Sea was searching for a tool that can predict and evaluate the potential impact of weather delays on the different working locations, to ensure efficient scheduling and to mitigate the potential consequences.

Alcatel Submarine Networks
SUBMARINE CABLES
Context
Alcatel Submarine Networks, part of Nokia, leads the industry in terms of transmission capacity and installed base with more than 750,000 km of optical submarine systems deployed worldwide.
It provides all elements of turnkey global undersea transmission systems. ASN offers an extensive services portfolio including project management, installation, and commissioning, along with marine and maintenance operations performed by its wholly-owned fleet of cable ships.
Challenge
ASN needs to estimate the potential weather downtime from bid to operations while planning for installation & maintenance operations at sea. These estimates have to be based on ASN Fleet operating parameters along the cable path, which may transit across many areas of the world over long distances and seasons.
Solution
After having used Metocean Analytics portal for several years, ASN now connected its Geographical Information System to Meteocean Analytics allowing for a fast estimate of sea conditions along a cable path, with a rather fine set of sample points.
“Our teams in bidding, operation planning, and operations used to consult Meteocean data from the portal, modeling sea conditions on selected points. The exercise was time-consuming which restricted the investigations.
We now connected our GIS platform to Metocean Analytics, sending queries automatically to the platform based on data we have in our GIS system. Investigations can be more granular and much faster than used to be. It also facilitates the handover of analysis from one team to the other.
Planning and pricing can be better adjusted and more complete information can support our communication with customers to select the lay period or manage weather downtime risks.”
